Planner Fun Plus

As someone who loves to stay organized, I've often found myself torn between the convenience of digital planning and the satisfaction of pen-and-paper planning. Despite the multitude of features and customization options offered by digital planning apps and software, I cannot help but feel disconnected when I am looking at a screen rather than physically jotting things down on paper. On the other hand, paper planners offer a more tactile and personal experience, but can be bulky and difficult to carry around. It's definitely a tough decision to make!

Paper or Digital?

I've tried using various digital planning apps and software over the years, but I always find myself missing the feeling of physically crossing something off my to-do list. There's just something so satisfying about putting pen to paper and seeing your progress in real-time. At the same time, I can't deny the convenience of being able to access my planner from anywhere with an internet connection. It's especially useful for keeping track of appointments and deadlines since digital planners can often send reminders and notifications. I will add, though, Digital planning tools like tablets and annotation apps can provide a similar experience to paper planning since you can write down tasks and cross them out when completed.

Digital planning with tablets can be an excellent way to scratch your creative itch while staying organized at the same time.  With the use of annotation apps, you can let your creativity go by sketching out your ideas and thoughts, and yes your tasks.  I love the flexibility of being able to edit, change, and move your ideas around until you find the perfect arrangement.  Being able to choose your own fonts, colors, and backgrounds makes the planning process more fun and personalized.  Staying on top of your work while enjoying the creative process is a win for me.

The Best of Both Worlds

Ultimately, I think the choice between digital and paper planning comes down to personal preference and lifestyle. For me, I like to use a combination of both, but only one at a time.  Currently, I'm big into digital planning, but realize that at a moment's notice, I can drop it for a month or two and set my paper planner up again.   My creativity with paper planners is often expressed in the creation of inserts and changing them up...often! It's the best of both worlds!

One thing I especially love about digital planning is how easy it is to customize your planner. As a designer, I love creating planners and inserts, but I also love the planning process as well. I like to try new things and switch things up often. To make it easier to change inserts without tearing up my entire planner, I use a landing page.

As a retired homeschool teacher, I'm not as busy as I used to be. With fewer plans, I often simplify my planner and streamline it to better fit my needs. The landing page I am sharing with you is what I've come up with so far.

The purple "Today" button takes me to an undated daily page that I have customized to fit my needs. Below that, I have three hyperlink buttons that lead to pages I use daily. 1. a financial page where I work out the week's budget. 2. a menu page where I plan out our meals. 3. a notes section that I use to jot down ideas to process later. Here's what that page looks like:

Side note: The image cuts off a part of my daily page because it is a ccustomsize. It fits my Samsung Galaxy screen with no gaps and gives a wall-to-wall feel, so to speak.

Along the left side of my landing page, you'll find my custom pages and notebooks. These are like dividers in a paper planner where you would find the information you need the most. Some of those pages include a brain dump, year at a glance and a contacts page. I have a section, or notebook, called Plant Based Diet where I keep lots of meal plans and recipes, and tips. There are many categories for a plant based diet. Because of this, I created a linked notebook with plenty of sections to customize. All the links within that notebook work, and I can use the home button to return to the notebook's index page.

Here's how I insert the notebook in my planner. I click the custom notebook link on my landing page that leads to my Plant Based Diet section. From there I inserted the template, placing it behind the Plant Based Diet section. To access the notebook, I click on the custom notebook link and swipe to the left on the Plant Based Diet Section. Return to the main planner's linking system by doing the reverse. Navigate through the notebook's homepage to the notebook index page. Swipe right to the section page to again access the planner's linking system.

An example of one of the linked notebooks I use inside my planner

My monthly calendar pages work the same way the linked notebooks do, as far as inserting them. I click on the month and land on March's calendar page. I use that calendar page as an index of sorts and for future planning. For example, I need to renew my domain in March, but I don't have my March calendar page loaded yet. I click the calendar page and write on that page when my domain payment is due. After I insert my calendar page for the month, I transfer any information that I had written down for that month.

The "to buy" section on the right side of the page is where I list items we need to buy. Milk and water almost always make the list! I use it often. The large box at the bottom of the page has come in handy. I use it to make quick math calculations, plan out a menu, and other tasks you would use a notepad for. When I'm not using it, I sometimes insert a photo of my family or of my 3 sisters and me.

I've also included several different notepapers and blank pages to use when the need comes up. I use the dot grid paper the most often.

If you have any questions about my planning process, don't hesitate to ask in the comments. I'll make sure to respond to your questions in the comments section, so be sure to check back later.

An annotation app is the first thing you will need on your tablet to use your digital planner. This type of app will allow you to add text, photos, and other customizations. The first app I tried, NoteShelf, is the app I stayed with. It is easy to use and has many great features.

1. Create Notebooks

The NoteShelf app allows the creation of notebooks with included templates. If you're someone who likes to compartmentalize everything, this feature is ideal! Besides creating notebooks in the app, you can upload your own pdf planners. Depending on the size of your tablet, you can add as many notebooks as you need.

2. Handwriting Recognition

NoteShelf has excellent handwriting recognition ability. This allows users to write notes with their stylus (or even their finger) and have them converted to text. I like a mixture of handwriting and typing in my planners. In my planner, I use the text conversion tool to label different sections of my planner

3. Annotation and Markup Tools

NoteShelf includes markup tools, such as highlighters, pens, pencils, and erasers. Other features allow you to also add shapes, stickers, and images to your notes.

4. Audio and Video Recording

I have only tried this a few times as I am not a fan of my voice or seeing myself on video (LOL!). It's an interesting feature, though. You can insert recordings and videos into your document. This would be useful if you were using this app as a college student taking notes.

5. Cloud Syncing

NoteShelf uses cloud storage services, to sync your pages across devices. I backed my planner to Dropbox. I like that I can recover my pages and/or information if I happen to delete something!

6. Customizable Templates

I enjoy creating my own templates (planners), so I don't use many of the customized templates. They are ideal, though, for someone who downloads the app and wants to get started right away. You can find to-do lists, calendars, meeting notes, and more. I use the included paper templates to sometimes add extra notes to my planner.

7. Exporting Options

This app allows users to export their creations in various formats, such as PDF, PNG, and JPEG. It is easy to share your notes with others or print them out.

NoteShelf is a versatile and powerful note-taking app with a wide range of features. It can help you create, organize, and annotate notes and planners. If you've had trouble finding an annotation app that works for you, I recommend giving this one a try. It's very easy to use.

About Me

As a retired homeschooling mom, I had been planning for a while, but now I'm thrilled to be embarking on new digital planning adventures and launching a new Etsy shop. Thank you for dropping by!

While PlannerFun.com has been in existence since 2014, I felt the need for a "do-over," which led to the removal of numerous posts. I'm excited about starting afresh! I hope you'll come back to see what's new in my digital planning and Etsy shop, and I look forward to sharing my journey with you. Thank you for your support!
